This lot will be accompanied by a Letter of Provenance, attesting to the fact that it resided in the historic Early '66 Time Capsule Collection, one of the most exciting and important concert poster discoveries of the past 20 years.

This early Fillmore handbill was produced for the ALLDANCE #1 event, hosted by The Charlatans, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Sopwith Camel. Most importantly, the bottom features the same famous design of the marching drummer that is displayed on the popular Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Benefit Show issue hosted by The Grateful Dead several months later at the same venue (AOR# 2.70). The artwork was done by Bob Collins.

Here was another case of Bill Graham subletting the Fillmore space to an unrelated promoter, so this is NOT a BG production. It was a really tiny window of time where he did that, before monopolizing the Fillmore.

A really fine example of the artistic sensibility that soon came to pervade the SF Scene rock posters, especially the Family Dog ones. Chet Helms was an enthusiastic fan of creating a "Theme" -- a title for a Dance concert -- and liked using archaic imagery, often old advertising images or clip art, as the central motif. Similar to the previous year, 1965 and original scenesters from the Red Dog Saloon crowd, with the affinities for the wild west and old time themes / clothing.

This piece hits it pretty squarely on the nose. GREAT lineup of early quintessential SF Sound bands... at a great moment, just 2 weeks after the BG-1 concerts. Just a few dozen exist in ANY condition and this Museum Quality. Probably less than 40-50 copies exist, and VERY few in TOP condition. The concert took place just one week before the famous King Kong Memorial Dance (FD-2), and King Kong is noted on the upper left of this EXTREMELY early handbill.

An amazing piece of early San Francisco Ballroom history!
