This is the first example seen of these handbills at any auction! The first handbill is certified by CGC. It was designed by modern Pacific Northwest artist, Mike King, for a canceled show that was set to feature Nirvana, Mudhoney, Poison Idea, and Calamity Jane. This handbill appears in Mike King’s book Maximum Plunder, which is currently the only cataloging system used to certify posters from the Pacific Northwest.
The second handbill does not appear in the book, and thus could not be graded by CGC. However, it is graded by PAE as a Mint 95. The rescheduled concert replaces Mudhoney with Helmet, and adds Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys fame as the event’s emcee, as is noted on the handbill. Although we originally thought this second one was also a Mike King design, it turns out that it is not. We believe that the promoter used the artwork from the original canceled show to create this new piece in order to promote the rescheduled show. It is 100% authentic and is the FIRST example that has been uncovered by the collector’s community.
The consignor of these handbills got them from Crossroads Records in Portland, OR, an important place in the history of the Northwest music scene.
